A strange thing happened: Asterisk does not allow any more connections
to the CLI, but it's still running.

While I can't be sure, I suspect the problem your having was resolved
recently by fixing the way the -rx processing works.  This was just put
into the 1.4 SVN branch a few days ago, so it isn't in any official release
but you could try to update to that branch.

Is this a pretty active box?  If you use the -rx arguments with asterisk
and theres tons of console messages its possible for the remote console not
to exit until it thinks its run out of data to read.
