Summary: segfault in devicestate.c
Description:
not sure what conditions caused it but it did happen and here is a quick
fix to stop it happening again

Instead of working around the issue we need to find out why the channel
name was NULL in the first place. Can you please open the core dump and do
the following and attach:
frame 2
print *chan
