I think that is only useful if two separate ports will be maintained  
over time. Which is unlikely. Otherwise it is just a pain for people  
having to switch from one port to another. This is a limitation of  
the FreeBSD ports system.

Perhaps the easiest way for people to test a new port is for the  
Makefile and patches to be posted (say, on this list)
