I have had some experience with NexCom systems. Here are few that a very small and cost about $600-$700 for the case, motherboard, bootable compact flash, and ram. The prices will drop much lower if you order in quantities of 10 or more.

VIA C3 800MHz CPU and three Ethernet ports

I had a specific need for a very small and lightweight box that could
carry a TDM400P with four FXS modules (I get confused on FXO/FXS
the one that gives POTS). I think that 8" x 4" x 8" is about as
small as it can get and it is a most fun almost silent box.

Pictures are here.

If you would like a similar machine I have a shopping list from
LogicSupply.com. And you can skip a few steps on the install
I have a disk image available for FTP, you can just boot G4U http://
www.feyrer.de/g4u/ from USB thing of choice and slurpdisk the image
to a 2 gig CF

It is FreeBSD 6.0 / Asterisk 1.2.1 / Zaptel (current as of yesterday )

(If my use of 2 gig CF seems very heavy handed, it is b/c this
machine is not a final product and does need to be able to use ports,
build stuff, etc, in the
field)

VIA EPIA MII12000 Mini-ITX Motherboard with CF and PCMCIA
$209.00

(This CF slot is not bootable and you could use a more basic board
but I also wanted PCMCIA.)

Transcend IDE Flash Module 2GB 40pin vertical
$217.00

C138B
Casetronic C138 Mini-ITX Case - Black - 90W
$153.00

(Very Well Made Case and it should be for so much money for so little
metal)
Has perforated sides and top, it cools good.

++ Ram as you feel correct for the application, the board has one
slot so I just throw in 1gig b/c why not.

++ Putting that tiny board in that small case is a PITA and it's
worth the $45 for assembly at logic supply.
The PCI card install is trivial, access is great.

If this all adds up to be kind of crazy expensive for what it is,
well yes it does, but if you need or want it, well there it is
a Big & Smart IAXy.
