Your rejoinder is extremely ironic.  I read the statement "I am not the one living in poverty in Gaza" as a disclaimer of experience, and as such, an implicit statement of compassion and a declaration and admission of the writer's inability to fully appreciate the depth of the despair.  In MY book, this strikes a chord of compassion that is more convincing than most platitudes.

I think the lacking of appreciation for the circumstances of the Other is at the core of the entire conflict.   It is what enables Israeli leadership and its supporters to rationalize the brutal effects of actions such as the current military incursion.  It is what enables the Palestinian populace to elect leadership that is avowed to the annihilation of its neighboring state.

Similarly - and even worse - the inability or unwillingness to just understand each others' statements impedes progress toward resolution.

So if you are calling for compassion let it not be shallow or narrow.

Andy, this is an asterisk biz list, you ain't supposed to comment on this.. having say that.. here is my answer to you:


Israelites don't know what Obama's doctrine will be, but their best bet is that he is really muslim friendly, so they are better off clearing up as much as possible before Jan 20.  The rocket's thing, is an excuse.

Having said that, the Palestinians really do throw lots and lots of rockets to innocent civilians in Israel, and they really got to be stopped for good.  Then again, I am not the one living in poverty in gaza with 2 million people in 150 square km.
