I think there's another element to this discussion that's not been explored: why people like T-Mobile can offer truly "unlimited" calling. The reason I should imagine is simple: they have a huge customer base, and if they make a staggering loss on a few customers, it's more than compensated by their profits on the customers who're paying for unlimited calling and only using a few hundred minutes a month (which is probably in excess of 90% of their subscribers).

That's all well and good for the large players in the market, but virtually impossible for small players without the wide customer base on which they can offset their losses incurred on a few heavy users.

I dislike the dishonest advertising as much as Bret, but at the same time, I can see that if smaller players don't resort to "dishonest" advertising, they'll be seen by the market as offering an inferior service (even though most of the target market would never reach a point where the definition of "unlimited" comes into play).

The real danger, as I see it, is that large players like T-Mobile will be able to simply force smaller players out of existence by offering something they know no-one else can offer without incurring substantial losses (and without the sheer number of light users over which to balance those losses).

Less competition and fewer players in the market is bad for the market as a whole.

Regards,

Chris
