that is because dect is designed first as a voice system, with roaming
built in, just like GSM (its kinda a "low power gsm" system, the
protocol is almost the same).

its critical for interoperability that you get GAP phones, that is the
only cross vendor standard, anything else you risk getting into a closed
system where you can only use that makers phone. The encryption
algorithm is operator specified, so GAP isnt required but its a good
idea in my opinion. The entire DECT spec is free except for GAP, ETSI
only releases that under an NDA and money paid, which is silly, but they
do that to try to get something if you want to make an interoperable
phone, and its this reason why some of the cheaper DECT systems dont do
GAP.

wep can be broken in less than 60 seconds on even an old PC. There are
many published papers dating back the last couple years on that. So its
actually worse than you said...
