Asterisk's code is copyright, but available to all under the GPL.
Access to it (excluding new code written by Digium) cannot be "shut
down".
Digium's value is its expertise in the existing codebase, the
consistency of that codebase with Digium's longer term strategy,
Digium's *trademark* on the "Asterisk" brand name, and its existing
customers (* their brand loyalty). In other words, like any other
company, its value is its ability to reach its market. Though unlike
some, it lacks the additional value of preventing competitors from
selling its existing product (except as "Asterisk").
