Several reasons.  Soon, sales taxes will be collected on all internet 
purchases (not just in-state, all the states are going broke, just look 
at the cost of a speeding ticket in VA).  In state or out of state,  
setup as a VAR, you do not pay those sales taxes.

If the "dealer" is not authorized, you could run into problems with 
warranty, RMA, firmware, and other support issues.

Wholesalers usually have better pricing, and yes, you can almost always 
negotiate a better price than quoted.

VAR Dealers often have demo gear for free or at a very low cost, plus 
many rebate programs.  See below.

If you build up a good relationship with your VAR distributor, they can 
many times send you leads, give you rock bottom pricing, and a good line 
of credit which helps with cash flow.
