If you are trying to send an SMS to a US cell phone almost all providers allow you to send a text message via email.
 i.e.:
Verizon - XXXXXXXXXX at vtext.com.
Sprint: - XXXXXXXXXX at messaging.sprintpcs.com
Cingular - XXXXXXXXXX at mobile.mycingular.com
Nextel - XXXXXXXXXX at messaging.nextel.com
