It's basically just a gate. It would only be useful if you compressed
the sound at one end and the expanded it back at the other end.  That's
kinda how the Dolby a/b (or whatever they're called - buttons on tape
decks) work.

They basically compress it before going to tape, then when you take it
off tape with x db of noise, the expansion process not only takes it
back to where it was (pretty much), but the lowering in volume of
quieter sounds (expansion) brings down the inherent tape noise or hiss.

On a digital system, you're probably not going to notice much difference
as the storage medium doesn't have noise in and of itself.
