I have had rock solid results with OpenVPN on the WRT54G, mine has been 
up 29 days and it would be much longer except the power went out.  
Install openwrt which now has a GUI to install a multitude of other 
packages. 

I doubt and phones or ATAs will support it but if you can get them to 
run linux maybe you can come up with a really good contribution to the 
community.
