Tim:
Very good question about telemarketers and directory assistance listings.
Unfortunately this is true, as it is for new DA listings provided by a conventional telephone company. Our submissions are no different, this is completely out of our control.
Unlike phone companies we do not provide the listings to book publishers, however. Some of the marketing lists come from phone book scanning and overseas transcription services, but others do come from electronic aggregation or simply queries to directory asistance databases. We disclose this to all participants.
One way to greatly reduce it is to list with no street address. The absence of the street address makes the listing less attractive to telemarketers because they cannot geocode or confirm a USPS legitimate address. Generally people requesting 411 directory assistance for businesses do not specify the address, only the business name, city and state.
On the residential side, of course, the listing subject should register first with donotcall.gov, and wait 30 days to list with 411.
Sincerely,

Sounds great but does this open up the flood gates for the list to be sold to telemarketers? We have not had a single incident with a telemarketer calling in on our VoIP lines, that's a good thing.

Subject: [asterisk-biz] WANTED: New VOIP 411 listings
Asterisk community:
As final testing phase of our system to provide listing submission services
to VOIP resellers and end user businesses, we are offering to insert new
directory assistance listings into the 411 National Directory Assistance
databases at no charge for a limited time.
Our service allows VOIP resellers to offer to their end users the ability to
list their businesses and residential lines in national 411 directory
assistance without dealing with a phone company, wholesaler or otherwise
incurring additonal monthly charges to be in 411. The same service will
later be provided to also list cellular phones or any dialable phone. This is
primarily a business service but residential listings are also accepted.
Here are the conditions for this program:
- phone numbers must be operational; no disconnected messages etc.
- phone numbers to be listed must be permanently assigned to the listing
subject business or residence.
- phone numbers to be listed must NOT be already represented in directory
assistance.
- one name and address per phone number, but you can list multiple names
using different DIDs.
The listings accepted will be available to 411 (and new free 411 services)
callers nationwide.
Some of you have already worked with us to get your clients' listings into
directory assistance. Take advantage of this opportunity to get more calls
for your or your clients' businesses by listing more of your DIDs in 411.
Contact me directly to participate.
