www.footnotess7.com is now open to begin the creation of SS7 that can be
used with asterisk.

Sign up and list which and what parts you would like to work on.

 Francisco:

Can you help me understand this :) ?.

I am used to think one port with 24/30 channels, maybe one port doing
signaling (E1). That's the way the Digium port will work. How does
that differs from the SS7 port level, are they receiving the same number
of channels? Is it like channel 16 (on an E1) sends the messaging to an
out of band channel on the SS7 port, and if so, what channel is that? if
there are 30 channels on the digium port, will the SS7 port handle 30
conversations?
I keep thinking one Digium port to one SS7 port, since that's all I
need. And finally, are all SS7 ports compatible?, or are there
"implementations"?, if so, how the heck am I going to know if what I am
paying for will work?

 Thanks a lot

SS7 is a complex stack involving many layers (MTP 1-3, SCCP,TCAP, ISUP).
I think you're talking about SSP and SCP.In SS7, one or more channels in
one or more E1s transport the signaling between a SSP(Service Switching
Point) and a SCP (Service Control Point). With only one channel between
an SCP and a SSP, an SCP can signal a huge amount of calls to the SSP.

What people usually talks about when talking about SS7 is ISUP, which is
somewhat like "EuroISDN". Then, when people here talks about "sending
calls over SS7", they really mean "sending calls over ISUP".

It is my understanding that you DO NOT send calls over SS7 you only
signal with it.. and a few channels on an E1 can signal many calls a
second.

Maybe with 24 E1s you can afford a small SSP ... SS7 licenses for
asterisk are quite expensive!

The Honduras telephone company, Hondutel, will supply E1 circuits
with SS7 signaling only (no PRI, no R2, nothing but SS7). The SS7
is on a separate circuit (I assume V.35).

We would like to interface Hondutel with one or more Asterisk
systems--we want Asterisk to be the bridge between Hondutel and
VoIP services. Initially we'll have one E1 for a proof of concept
trial. If successful the project will immediately grow to ~24 E1
circuits.

The problem is finding an inexpensive interface with the E1/SS7
circuit that will interoperate with Hondutel.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
